Before Spanish colonization, the various ethnic groups in the Philippines primarily used a barter system for trade. However, when it came to international trade, the pre-colonial Filipinos used different currencies that came in the form of cowry shells and precious metals. One of the earliest forms of coinage used in the Philippines were small gold beads with stamped inscription called 'Piloncitos'. This color evokes the image of aged copper that takes on a greenish patina over time.
