Cover and book
In a quiet, open landscape with a beautiful view, the world of Hiroko Kubota shines with originality, beauty, and unique ideas. This time, one of Kubota’s works has been turned into a cover for a Hobonichi 5-Year Techo.
To be worthy of something that you will keep for 5 years, it’s made to keep sparking your interest. Every time you inspect it closely, you will discover something fresh and new about the design. After many thoughtful exchanges with Kubota, we incorporated a variety of subtle, creative touches to this cover.
As sugar-grain meteors fall from the pale blue sky, the cat on the boat starts adjusting the salt levels. The lighthouse beats a steady rhythm of light, while flying fish stitch new seams across the waves. The giraffe-like gantry cranes gather for a waterside chat, occasionally letting out a yawn. This cover captures a mysterious moment at dawn, one that is only known to the sea.
A cat is riding the boat. If you look closely, you will see that alongside it, there is a bucket with the word “salt” written on it. Turns out it was this cat’s job to regulate the ocean’s salt levels all this time.
In the sky, a meteor shower flashes across the vastness. Within it, there is a single larger one, which catches the light and shines demurely with its gold foiling.
The giraffe-like gantry cranes are having a merry little chat. The flying fish on the other hand are happily swimming and jumping around, sewing together the water’s surface.
The sky and sea expand into the interior of the cover. The bookmark is in a pale gray with a muted shine, blending into the quiet scenery. The pen hook on the inside lets you store your pen by its clip, while still maintaining the cover’s clean, refined silhouette when closed.
A wondrous world with a number of unique motifs studded around that exist within a wide and quiet scenery. We hope that you will be able to keep using this cover for a long time with playful curiosity about this scene.
